Hippo's Best Of 2020

2020 was a bonkers year. Covid-19 was wrecking everything; all non-essential business were shut down and nobody could do anything because we didn’t want others to get sick.

Each year I work with The Hippo making photographs for their magazine-style, color magazine celebrating the best local businesses in the Southern NH area. These are all reader-generated winners; people voting for who they think are the best in their area. It’s a great thing when supporters of your business vote for you.

We didn’t let Covid totally kick our butts and keep us locked in the studio the whole year. I got a chance to get out for a few weeks and make photographs of some of the selected winners.

Here is a gallery of some of my favorite images from 2020 that we made for the Best Of issue. I love looking back and thinking about all the great things I get to photograph each year for the Hippo. The last few years has been mostly food, so I certainly enjoy when I get to eat what I just photographed :)

Each year, The Hippo magazine hires me to handle a majority of the images for their “BEST OF” issue. This is a quality color glossy magazine that covers all of Southern New Hampshire that features businesses voted and recommended by readers and citizens of the state. If you love certain businesses and want them to get a little exposure, you can write them in. The places with the most votes then get collected in this magazine with short articles and information about them. It’s serves as a great travel guide for visitors to see what the state has to offer.

Captain Plunger for Yankee Magazine

Last year I got my first assignment from Yankee Magazine. I got to spend a freezing February morning with Bill Jones' alter ego Captain Plunger as he prepared for his yearly plunge into the freezing waters of Hampton Beach for the Penguin Plunge put on by the New Hampshire Special Olympics. Bill has been doing the plunge since it's inception, and over the last 17 years he continues to be the one individual who raises the most money each year.

Hippo Best Of 2016 • Portraits

I've been working with The Hippo for years now. It makes me happy when each year they reach out to me to photograph for their glossy "Best Of" magazine. Hippo's Best Of asks readers each year to tell them all of their favorite places and businesses in Southern New Hampshire. In the past, when the magazine focused more on personalities, I was proud to have my name mentioned five years in a row. The last few years however, the magazine has restructured it's format and is now more of a "travel guide" to help visitors locate new places that they might not have heard of before.

For 2016, I wanted to make sure I took portraits of the people who ran the venues I was assigned to photograph, and I wanted to share some of those people in this post.
