Ah, mini-vacations. Its always good to get away, even if its for a weekend; recharge the batteries and take in new sights or head to destinations that you might not get a chance to visit very often. The other weekend, Sara and I loaded up the car and took a trip down to Southern New York to visit the Storm King Art Center.
This gorgeous outdoor sculpture park is 500 acres of beautiful landscape and epic sized towering sculptures that you can walk around and enjoy. Our main reason for going was to finally see the Stork King Wall, created by nature artist Andy Goldsworthy. For those of you who don't know Andy's work, he works entirely in Nature with natural materials; rocks, trees, leaves, mud, ice - none of his materials are artificially created. His site-specific work involves the environment that surrounds him. A few years back a really fantastic documentary entitled "Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy" was released on DVD, and I strongly recommend you rent it and watch his artistic process. He is a truly gentle soul and an inspiration to Sara and myself. He is one of my favorite artists.
On the return trip, we stopped off at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Then, after a wonderful weekend of art viewing, we headed back to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
If you are in the area please go visit Storm King. It is a safehaven for creative sculpture and one of the most serene places I've ever visited.
