Lacy Kay • Musician Session for Hot Mess

Lacy Kay

I've been developing a relationship with the band HOT MESS over the months, and they were so happy with the work we've done so far that when a new member of the band came into the mix, Jason, the head of Hot Mess, contacted me asking if we could create some new head shots for Lacy, but he also needed one other thing: he wanted a photograph of Lacy in the style of the group shot we did months ago so that she could be inserted into the group photo we had taken months before.

Let's give it a shot.

We had to follow an established look.  Jason wanted a photograph of Lacy that he could then insert into a couple of group photographs we took earlier this year.

Here is one example of the old group photo of Hot Mess:

and here is what we ended up with:

Jason knew that she should be in a dark dress to go along with the group's look in the photo.  Having her photographed against a similar grey background was fairly simple.  I knew she was going to be standing a certain way; her body angled to camera left and basically "mimicking" what the previous band member was doing.  The biggest obstacle was mixing her into the photograph and have it look good.  For that, I turned to my buddy Travis, who I have had do some post-production magic for me in the past when something was beyond my abilities.  There is not shame in knowing your strengths and weaknesses.  Getting Lacy to mix into the background was beyond what I was comfortable doing, so I had Jason pay Travis for taking care of the digital insertion of Lacy into the images he needed.

While Lacy was at the studio, I got a few great shots of her and got to chat with her a bit.

I'm really digging the whole Hot Mess clan.  I'm looking forward to working with all of them again and again in the future.
